Thanks to laws that recognized their strategic role and encouraged its spread, purchase, social, production and service cooperatives saw a great development in the ‘70s and’ 90s. Emilia Romagna, the land of the cooperative movement, was one of the poorest areas in Italy at the end of the Second World War. Today is one of the richest in the peninsula. Over the past few decades, it has climbed over twenty regions in terms of per capita income and the unemployment rate is almost twice lower than the national average.
